Tamar Roberts - Certified Diagnostic Technician

High School: Ocean Lakes ('02), Va. Beach Technical & Career Education Center (AYES program)
Career & Technical Ed. Program Studied: Auto Technology
Additional Studies/Training: BMW training classes in NJ

Finely-Tuned Skills

Cars have become so complex that the days of backyard mechanics are over … and motorists must rely on skilled technicians like Tamar Roberts to handle the repairs. Tamar is a BMW-certified diagnostic technician at a major dealership in Virginia Beach—a post she began in high school. “I actually worked here as a junior,” she recalls. “After school, I would work with a mentor. They were gearing me toward staying on after high school, and sent me to BMW training. After I graduated, they wanted me to stay, and I felt really comfortable.” Tamar is also comfortable with all the intricate automotive and diagnostic technology. “I didn’t want a repetitive job. Here, my job is computer-oriented, and there’s something different every day.”

Jacob Teter - Mercedes Technician

High School: North Atlantic Regional School ('01), Massanutten Technical Center
Career & Technical Ed. Program Studied: Diesel Equipment Technology
Additional Studies/Training: ASE certification; Universal Technology Institute (Houston, TX); specialized Mercedes-Benz training

From a Technical Center to a Technical Career

“I knew I wanted to work with my hands,” says Jacob Teter, “so I went to an open house at Massanutten Technical Center (MTC) and sat in on an industrial diesel class. Seeing what they did showed me something I was interested in.” With that discovery, he began studying diesel mechanics five days a week, in addition to his homeschooling coursework.

During his senior year, Jacob’s strong showing in state and national SkillsUSA state diesel competitions earned him a scholarship to Universal Technology Institute in Houston. After 18 months of study at UTI (and some specialized training from Mercedes-Benz), Jacob landed a post at a major DC-area Mercedes dealership.

“If I hadn’t gone to MTC,” says Jacob, “I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
